French SMBs and digital adoption: reading the figures carefully

Useful studies with specific boundaries

SMB surveys do not use the same countries, company sizes or questions. An average across five markets does not describe all of Europe. A declared intention to adopt AI does not measure a real productivity gain.

Before using a percentage, check the population, date, wording and method. Add your own sales, enquiries, processes and constraints before making a business decision.

Website adoption in a five-market panel

An IONOS/YouGov study published in July 2026 reports that 56% of French respondents have a website, versus 61% across the five countries studied. France ranks fourth in that panel, not necessarily last across Europe.

The useful diagnosis is not just whether a site exists. Check whether it explains the offer, works on mobile, generates enquiries, supports useful operations and has an owner for updates.

Cost, time and skills

IONOS also reports cost as a barrier for 50% of French respondents in 2026, versus 56% in 2025 in its annual comparison. This describes survey answers, not an optimal project budget.

A useful budget connects the problem, scope, responsibilities and measures. Internal preparation, approval and operation are part of the cost even when a tool appears free.

France Num’s typology

The 2025 France Num barometer describes four profiles: 25% Mature, 24% Dynamic, 12% Potential and 39% Reluctant. This research typology cannot be reduced to three questions about Lighthouse, a CRM or a newsletter.

Use profiles to start a discussion, not to assign a business automatically. A retailer, professional practice and manufacturer may have very different priorities.

AI: start with a measurable process

Enthusiasm for AI does not prove return on investment. Choose a concrete process such as drafting a response, sorting requests, finding information or assisting production. Measure time, errors, human approval and total cost before and after.

Do not send sensitive data without a framework. Review providers, access, retention, rights and accountability. An impressive demonstration is not a reliable deployment.

Avoid automatic lost-revenue calculations

Applying a survey percentage to hypothetical revenue does not prove a loss. Revenue attributed to digital is neither margin nor profit. Investment, timing, substitution effects and uncertainty must remain visible.

Use low, central and high scenarios with explicit assumptions. Track an operational and a commercial indicator. Stop or adapt the action when evidence does not support the hypothesis.

Prioritize the next step

Start with the most frequent or expensive friction: an unclear offer, obsolete site, scattered requests, repetitive work or insufficient visibility. Define a first deliverable that can be reviewed.

Studio serves the creation or rebuild of a web asset. Infinity provides recurring capacity within the selected plan’s disciplines. Neither replaces an objective, baseline data and a decision owner.

At Synerium, Studio is a scoped website project financed directly by Synerium over 36 months, with launch fees. Source code can be provided on request from month 12 without cancelling the remaining payments; full ownership transfers at month 36. Infinity covers recurring needs: design from Starter, marketing and SEO/GEO from Premium, development from Ultimate. Scope and active capacity depend on the selected plan. An unlimited request queue does not mean a full-time team or unlimited output. Current prices, commitments, exclusions and third-party costs are detailed on the offer pages.

Discuss your priority or compare Studio and Infinity.

Your next step

A digital project to move forward?

Tell us about your goals and constraints. We can help identify the expertise and support relevant to your project.

Are French SMBs last in Europe?

The cited study ranks France fourth among five markets. It does not measure every European country.

Do 56% of French businesses have a website?

That is the reported result in the cited 2026 IONOS/YouGov panel and depends on its population and method.

How should the France Num profiles be used?

As a discussion aid. The published profiles cannot be assigned through three improvised questions.

Does AI guarantee productivity gains?

No. Measure a specific process, human approval, errors and total cost.

How should a first project be chosen?

Select a frequent or expensive problem, a reviewable deliverable and a before/after indicator.
