ChatGPT, Claude, Lovable or a web agency: how to choose for your SMB website in 2026

What this comparison can actually help you decide

A tool producing a first page and a team taking responsibility for a live website do not provide the same service. Start with the outcome you need: explain your business, receive enquiries, sell online or operate a business process.

This is an editorial decision framework, not a ranking based on four reproducible tests. The initial version combined reported trials of three tools with an agency scenario assembled from market references. Without published repositories, prompts, measurement reports and a protocol, we do not present Lighthouse scores, design ratings or compliance grades as proof of general superiority.

Use the same brief to compare different solutions

Consider a fictional consulting firm needing an eight-page website, a contact form, service descriptions and a simple way to edit content. Add the content responsibilities, languages, data collection, integrations and maintenance owner to the brief before comparing prices.

Useful criteria include production and review time, mobile journeys, accessibility, working forms, measured performance, indexability, data protection and the ability to hand over the project. A single score out of ten hides these differences.

ChatGPT and Claude: who handles the move to production?

These assistants can help write a brief, generate code and investigate errors. Outcomes depend on the model, instructions, access and human review. Dependencies, hosting, user journeys and updates still need to be checked and managed.

A successful demonstration does not establish a delivery time for every website. Record tool versions, dates, instructions, human time and necessary fixes when comparing trials. A complex website or business integration may produce a very different result.

Lovable: exportable applications still need an operating plan

Lovable’s ownership and hosting documentation states that you own your code, can sync it to Git and host it elsewhere. The application code is not confined to a proprietary Lovable model.

Code portability does not make migration instant. Data, authentication, storage, secrets and connected services must also be transferred and tested. Document dependencies and a recovery procedure before you need them.

Agencies and hybrid delivery: buy scope and accountability

An agency may handle discovery, design, implementation, acceptance testing and ongoing support. Check its actual proposal: neither price nor agency status guarantees that scope. An agency may use AI internally; that alone proves neither a price reduction nor higher quality.

A hybrid approach can suit a project where you prepare content or a prototype and a professional reviews architecture and critical journeys. Agree who accepts delivery, fixes incidents and owns the remaining work. For an MVP, compare how quickly you can validate the need and how much a later rebuild could cost.

Calculate total cost, not just the tool subscription

Include licences, suitable hosting, domain, third-party services, internal time, testing, maintenance and a possible exit. Vercel Hobby is restricted to personal, non-commercial use; do not assume it is free hosting for a commercial SMB website.

Compare the same scope over the same period. Revenue attributed to a website is not profit. A return estimate needs margin, costs and attribution uncertainty. No universal revenue threshold or annual number of changes automatically makes an agency cost-effective.

SEO and personal data require checks, not a score

Google does not guarantee rankings or timing based on the creation tool. Its spam policies cover scaled content created to manipulate results; using AI is not itself a penalty.

Review the data collected, purposes, providers, access rights, retention and trackers actually deployed. A basic contact form does not remove those responsibilities. Seek competent advice for sensitive situations; a tool or provider name does not establish compliance.

Choose the next step around your needs

If the need is uncertain, begin with a prototype and user feedback. For a launch, require acceptance checks and an operating owner. For recurring work, compare actual production capacity with expected demand.

At Synerium, Studio is a scoped website project financed directly by Synerium over 36 months, with launch fees. Source code can be provided on request from month 12 without cancelling the remaining payments; full ownership transfers at month 36. Infinity covers recurring needs: design from Starter, marketing and SEO/GEO from Premium, development from Ultimate. Scope and active capacity depend on the selected plan. An unlimited request queue does not mean a full-time team or unlimited output. Current prices, commitments, exclusions and third-party costs are detailed on the offer pages.

Scope your website project and discuss the work required. If you already have a proposal, use our guide to evaluating a web agency quote.

Your website project

A site to build or improve?

Discuss your goals, your current site and your constraints. We can assess whether Studio, our website offer with ongoing support, fits your project.

Does Google penalize AI-generated websites?

Not simply because AI was used. Content quality, accessibility and compliance with spam policies matter. No tool guarantees indexing or rankings.

How long does SEO take?

It depends on the website, competition, indexing and work carried out. Agree a monitoring period and measurable objectives without turning an estimate into a guarantee.

Who owns code created with Lovable?

Lovable states that you own your code and can sync it to Git and host elsewhere. Plan the transfer of data, connected services and access as well.

Does AI always make a website cheaper?

No. Compare total cost, including management time, testing, maintenance and rework. Savings depend on scope and available skills.

Can AI and professional support work together?

Yes. An internal prototype or draft content can provide a starting point. Agree responsibility for validation, security and operation before delivery.
